SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL
Sustainable travel means travelling with respect for nature, people, culture and the environment, ensuring that destinations remain preserved for future generations. In Rwanda, sustainability plays a central role in tourism development. Responsible travel supports local communities while protecting wildlife and natural habitats.
Key guidelines for sustainable travel in Rwanda:
-
Support local communities: Buy local products and souvenirs made by local artisans.
-
Respect nature and wildlife: Do not disturb animals or remove plants from protected areas.
-
Waste management: Always take your rubbish with you and dispose of it properly.
-
Photography: Ask permission before taking photos of local people, respecting cultural and personal boundaries.
-
Fair trade: Pay fair prices for goods and services to support the local economy.
Rwanda is internationally recognised for its strong environmental policies, including a ban on plastic bags and large-scale reforestation initiatives.
CLIMATE AND BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
Thanks to its high altitude, Rwanda enjoys a pleasantly mild climate throughout the year, with average temperatures ranging between 16°C and 26°C. Rainfall, however, varies by region and season.
December – February | Short Dry Season
These months mark a short dry period and are an excellent time to travel through Rwanda. Conditions are ideal for a round trip and for gorilla trekking, with generally good weather and accessible trails.
March – May | Long Rainy Season
This is the wettest period of the year. The onset and duration of the rainy season may vary annually, but heavy rainfall is common—usually in short, intense showers rather than all-day rain.
Trails in the rainforests can become more challenging, making gorilla trekking more demanding and photography conditions less optimal.
However, this is a great time for chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest, as fruiting trees attract chimpanzees to lower levels, making them easier to spot.
June – September | Long Dry Season
One of the best periods to visit Rwanda. Rainfall is low, offering excellent conditions for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris in Akagera National Park.
Due to high demand, it is strongly recommended to book gorilla permits well in advance during these months.
October – November | Short Rainy Season
This short rainy season brings occasional showers, which may affect road and trail conditions in forested areas.
On the positive side, nature is at its most vibrant: vegetation is lush, making this an excellent season for birdwatching. Rain showers are often followed by clear blue skies—ideal for dramatic landscape photography.
